WARNING: Insect Repellents
The use of insect repellents has increased dramatically, but so can the health risks as a result of their use. The EPA is canceling the use of a common ingredientR-11in over 200 common insect repellents because of the possible risk of cancer. The cancellation will take place 60 days after the EPA files its report, unless it can be shown that the substance, listed on labels as 2,3,4,5 BIS, is shown to be safe. However, there still remains, on store shelves and homes, many thousands of cans which contain R-11. According to NBC News, some companies will voluntarily re-call these items, a process which is only about 10% effective. It's recommended that existing repellent be discarded, and if you must use one avoid those with R-11. If you have any questions regarding this issue, call the EPA toll free: 1-800-858-7378. The EPA says they have been besieged with phone calls since the cancellation announcement was made. (The article is from the May/June 1990 issue.)
