Personal Performance

If you're an executive, student or other human performer looking for an advantage in brain power, consider these recommendations:

1. When going to an important morning meeting, lecture, class or exam, don't eat a high carbohydrate breakfast like cereal or pancakes. Especially avoid the donut and coffee. A high carbohydrate or sweet meal will increase your serotonin and make your brain less alert. Instead, have a high protein breakfast: some eggs, cheese or meat. No potatoes or toast.

2. If it's a long important day, you'll want to do the same thing at snack time (if there is one) and at lunch. Avoid candy and fruit; they will increase serotonin and make your brain sluggish.

3. If you're having more than one day of important activities, make dinner a carbohydrate meal, like pasta, which will help you relax and sleep during the night. The next morning, start your day again with a high protein, low carbohydrate meal. (Hotels put candy on your pillow in the evening because of its sedating effect.)
